I believe the bright colours used on this magazine front cover are effective but the picture is not very exciting and does not convey anything about the school itself. The logo is very small in an empty part of the magazine cover and therefore surrounded with a lot of background; I think it should be bigger as it is one of the only two ways on the cover to identify the school. The cover does not have any information about what the magazine contains and therefore nothing to attract it to customers. Overall, without a picture of a student, the magazine fails to show how pupils feel about their school, while the lack of information means readers can not find out what the school may offer.
This magazine front cover is effective at immediately telling the reader the name of the school, information about the magazine and an image of a student. The colour scheme, however, is quite dull and the image shows a stressed out boy which suggests the school may put a lot of pressure on its pupils, which would not make it attractive to many people. Being the only image on the cover, this is the only opinion we are given of the school which appears to be a negative one. However, i like how the image is the background of the cover because it is more effective than a plain blackground. Below the title is a sentence in a small font which makes it look like a white line. This font should be bigger in a different colour. The fonts used on this cover are very different from one another and not very attractive. I believe they should be similar to one another and in a range of colours to appeal more to readers.
I like this magazine cover as the main attraction is a hard working student. The hand on the girls head is the most obvious part of the photogrpah which portrays her as deep in thought. The magazine cover includes information about what the magazine includes inside as well as a row of four images which all show different aspects of the school. The background, however, is quite is quite boring as it is just blue; there are various colours for the different texts which makes the cover more attractive but i believe the red text is hard to read over the bright background. I prefer the idea shown on the previous magazine cover of using a photo as the background. The same font is used over the entire cover and is not very interesting. Sans-serif text is used which I believe makes the magazine look more formal; the font could be more interesting.
Further Research
I have continued to research school magazines by looking at ones which I believe relate to my own. The two i will look at both feature students outdoors, where I will be taking my photographs.
This magazine shows a girl smiling which is not completely natural, however, she is not looking at the camera making it more realistic. The image shows a grl outdoors, linking it to mine. However, I believe the title is the most obvious part of this magazine as it is very bold, while the detailed background in the photograph takes over the magazine. I will edit my photgraph to assure the model is the main focus of the image. In addition I will make my title clear to read and obvious but the font and colours will be subtle so it does not over-power my image. The bold black outline of the word 'fly' used on this cover stands out and does not link with any colours used in the photograph, which I believe does not allow the two to link very well.
My model will be playing a guitar in the photograph, rather than playing football, but this links with mine as both students are taking part in a hobby, rather than doing school work. In addition, both photographs are set outdoors. This picture shows a lot of background which I will try to avoid. I also plan to blur the background to keep the attention on the model and not the surroundings. The title on the cover is covered by the picture slightly, so it is hard to read, however, this makes the photo the most obvious part of the cover which may have been the aim.
