Research

This image shows a close up shot taken of the model. the colours are simple and pale, making it overall quite bright. However, her dark eye make up and ring add contrast and make parts of the image stand out more. The blonde hair adds to the light colour scheme. The pose is quite natural and portrays her as calm and thoughtful - it is not an intimidating pose or used to create a significant mood.

This image is similar to the previous one in the colour scheme which is light. In addition, the models eyes are made darker through make-up to make them stand out. The make-up is slightly more harsh on the model and the pose is more dramatic. The images are similar but show how different moods can be shown through make-up, emphasising the eyes. Her hair is blowing backwards so it is not over her face; the adds to the natural mood.

This image is almost black and white, however, the lips, cheeks and hair do show very faint colour. Once again, though posed, the image is quite natural and overall a similar colour sheme is used. The black jacket links to the eye make-up so her eyes stand. Furthermore, her hair is blowing slightly back which looks natural and shows she has not been styled too much. This also links with the Taylor Swift image. Unlike the previous two images, this one does not lighten her whole face as a shadow from her hair crosses her eye.

Magazine Research

Lighting 

The left dark, shadowed picture is more mysterious and intimidating. The right hand magazine, however, is much lighter which allows the reader to fully see the model and therefore understand their mood. This image portrays a depressed, thoughtful mood.

Clothing

All of these magazines show the models wearing black and white outfits. The black and white clothing is simple and makes the model stand out as the colours are bold against each other. This also means the text can be different colours without clashing with/ taking over the image.

Different poses are used in each of these covers but all are forced poses. The Rolling stones magazine shows Jay-Z looking very sophisticated through the clothing and pose, while the XXL magazine cover shows Lil Wayne wearing casual clothing and looking intimidating through an aggressive pose.Their clothing and poses gives them completely different images. The magazine featuring Taylor Swift shows her posing in a relaxed way, making her look laid-back. Contrastingly, the Paramore magazine shows a more forced pose, conveying her attitude. Finally, the Duffy magazine shows quite a laid-back pose but also shows her confidence. The way she is leaning forward makes her face the main focus of the image.

In contrast, this image shows a model who is wearing a colourful, themed outfit. The model has a very forced pose which give her attitude.

 

In addition, the background contrasts to those above as it is patterned. However, the focus is not taken off of the model. It also links with the models outfit as the flowers in the background link with her hair accessories. Furthermore, a shadow can be seen outlining the model which makes her stand out of the cover.

In some of these magazines, the title is shown in the top left hand corner; spin and XXL show this trait, while the rest show the title in the centre, across the top of the page. Most magazines show the font without a coloured background but 'spin' magazine has a red box around it making it very bright and bold. Unlike the other magazines, rolling stones magazine has changed the font colour on each cover. This shows the magazine is clearly well-known enough to not have to stick to a colour scheme.

Evaluation Questions

1) In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

The school magazine I have designed has many traits of a typical magazine, which I had previously researched. On the title page, the heading is in the top left hand corner and goes halfway across the page. However, the cover generally uses the rule of thirds, with all article titles on the left third and the image across the other two. Many school magazines I researched showed images of children working but I decided to take a different approach and show the model playing an instrument; the school uniform means the image is related to a school but the instrument shows that the school has a specific target audience – it is a performing arts school. Three different fonts are used on the title page which is usually the case with magazines but I have also used a range of three colours, all found within the image. Though many magazines use around three colours on the title page, I have edited the fonts so the colours are used in different ways, for example some words are just outlined with colour which I believe challenges conventions of real magazines. On the contents page, I have continued with the same colour scheme to show that the pages link and to keep the magazine consistent. I have used the rule of thirds on the contents page as, from research, I found this is commonly used and so it makes the contents page look realistic. Furthermore, I have a column on the left hand side which is different to the other two because it has information about the making of the magazine, while the other two have a list of the contents of the magazine. This links to my research as the contents pages also have a seperate column but they listed featured articles, rather than information about the making of them, showing how mine had challenged conventions of real media products. In addition, the columns on the magazines I researched were in a different colour to the others to stand out. Although mine is in the same colour, the text colour is different, showing it presents different information to that on the rest of the page. The page is in three columns which I have separated with blue lines; I have used this colour as it is part of the colour scheme and clearly separates the columns. This means the page is organsied well.

2) How does your media product represent particular social groups?
My school magazine represents school children as this is its purpose. This is clear on both the title and contents pages as the model is wearing a school uniform. However, the social groups represented are more specific than just school children as the model is playing a guitar, showing the magazine represents people who like music/ performing arts. The colours used on both pages I have made portray the magazine as quite sophisticated, as bright colours would be more appropriate for younger children. The colours therefore represent teenagers, while the fonts used throughout the magazine are quite feminine and sophisticated, linking to the colour scheme. The magazine represents girls more as the model is female, while the fonts used also portray this, however, the colour scheme is not girly and so would represent both girls and boys, showing that the magazine is overalll unisex.

3) What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
One of the main magazine publishers is Bauer Media, which operates in various countries around the world. Not only does Bauer Media publish magazines, but is also involved in TV, radio and online. The business is well known for publishing music magazines such as Kerrang and Q but is also based around celebrity gossip magazines which suggets it is inappropriate for a school magazine. Furthermore, Bauer Media would probably not be interested in a small magazine like 'The Valley' school magazine as they are used to publishing large, well-known ones.
Another company which may be appropriate to publish my school magazine is IPC which is the UK's leading consumer magazine publisher. Unlike Bauer Publisher, IPC is based around publishing hobby and lifestyle magazines which a school magazine would fit into. However, a smaller independent company may be more interested in a small magazine like 'The Valley Buzz' as it has a small target market and is not expected to be sound throughout the entire country. If the company is not well known though, the magazine may not be well known and therefore not be sold. IPC is well known and has a high reputation which suggests 'The Valley Buzz' will do well if published by this company. I would therefore recommend my magazine is published by IPC media.

4) Who would be the audience of your product?

The school magazine clearly targets school children and I believe the image of a girl and the fonts used on the cover would attract girls more. However, the title page and contents page both show the model playing a guitar which narrows the target audience to people who are into music or performing arts. The reason for this is because the school is for performing arts and it is therefore vital for the magazine cover and contents pages to attract the correct audience. The magazine will, however, also appeal to parents of school children as they will be interested in their childs learning environment.

5) How does it attract/ address your auience?
Throughout the front cover, I have used a range of different fonts and text sizes to make the article headings stand out and attract the audience. The colours link in with those seen in the image which are blue and browns mainly; as the colours are not really bright, it looks quite sophisticated and would attract the ideal target market of secondary school aged children and parents. The image shows a girl playing the guitar; by having an instrument on the cover, anyone who is interested in music will be attracted to the cover and engage with it. The contents page continues with this trait, showing a guitar and music sheets which will let the audiene know the school is obviously involved with music. Furthermore, the main titles on the front cover and contents page are bold and obvious and will immediately attract the readers attention. As the title on the front cover is 'The Valley Buzz' it is associated with the The Valley school and will therefore address any pupils at the school or parents with childrent there.

6) What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
During construction of this magazine, I have been introduced to various new computer programmes which have helped me to create my final product. Firstly, I made a Blogger account which meant I could write about my work and any changes I have made. I found it very helpful as it means I can edit my work easily and saves time that would have been spent printing out work. I firstly designed my blog to make it look attractive and I believe this makes all my work look interesting and appealing to read. I have also been introduced to Photoshop which I have used to edit the pictures I have used in my final product. Photoshop has allowed me to make my photographs look more professional and interesting as I can add effects and edit the lighting etc. I have edited the background in the main image on the front cover by making it look dark so make the model stands out. One of the main programmes I have used while making this product is Indesign which I used to put together my title and contents pages. Indesign was quite hard to use at first but I have learnt that it is similar to photoshop in the way layers and tools are used. I believe this has helped me to produce a realistic, professional product.

Final Magazine, Final design

This is my final magazine cover. I have improved it by adding another article title at the bottom of the page looked very empty. Futhermore, I have spaced out each of them so the page does not look too empty. The final article heading at the bottom of the page also uses the blue/brown/white colour scheme so it fits in well.

I have changed my contents contents by introducing more than one layer. The bottom right-hand picture is in a seperate layer which allows the blue line to continue down the page behind it. I have also changed the font colour - instead of the contents list being in black (which was very bold, making the right two thirds look heavier than than  left hand third) I have changed it to match the title's background colour. The text in the left hand third is less important and is therefore in a lighter shade of the title background colour. This prevents it from taking over the page but also does not make it look hidden. I also centered all of the text on the page to make it neater, while spacing it out so the bottom of the page does not look empty. In addition, I put one space between each letter in the title so it covers the whoel background box because before there was an empty block of colour.

Final Magazine, initial design

This is my magazine front cover. I have placed the title in the top left hand corner. The font is white on a brown background, allowing it to stand out. I selected the brown colour from the guitar and have used this in the text on the cover as well. I have used more than one font to make the title page attractive but have used only three altogether, so it does not make the cover confusing. 

This is the contents page. It clearly links to the front cover as both titles are on the same brown background, linking them to the guitar. I have included another image from the asme photoshoot as well as a photograph of the guitar. This keeps the theme of music throughout the magazine. The two columns on the right contain a list of what the contents contains and the one on the left contains information about the magazine, for example, contact details and information about the model on the front.

Manipulating contents page photograph's

This picture is from my original photoshoot and will feature in my contents page. I have cut the girl out from the background and changed the colours on the photograph so they are must more subtle and pale. The imgae will fit into the contents page's colour scheme very well now.

Here is the photograph of the guitar after I edited it to remove the background and reduce the saturation. By doing this, the guitar picture links with the other photograph on the front cover.

Both images relate to music; my magazine is for a performing art school which therefore makes the images appropriate.

Photograph's for the contents page

I took this photograph during the same photoshoot which the main image comes from. It will feature in the contents page but I will edit it by cutting out the girl as the background is very distracting. I will also edit the coloursby making them fade slightly; this will link the image to the grey colour scheme used on the contents page.

I have also taken some pictures especially for the contents page. They relate to the main image as all are linked with music:

 

This is picture of music books, linking with the theme of music.

The two guitar images have been taken at different angles but in both the top of the instrument can be seen clearly, in focus, while the rest loses focus as it gets further from the camera. I have chosen to use the guitar image above as more of the instrument can be seen, however, as with the picture of the model, I will remove the background to ensure all focus is on the guitar.

Plan for Magazine contents page

I drew this simple plan of how my contents page will look and what it will include.

I firstly separated the page into three sections; the first will contain information about making the magazine, for example the date of issue and who the model on the cover is. It will also provide information about the following issue as well as contact details. Futhermore I am considering putting a border on the left hand side saying the name of the school.

The second and third sections will have the title 'Contents' as well as the contents of the magazine and the pages the articles are on. In addition there will be two images between the list of articles.


The images I have chosen to put in my contents page link to the one on the front cover. The first comes from the same photoshoot as the main image and shows a student playing the guitar outside. However, the image differs from the other as I have reduced the saturation, making the colours quite pale; almost greyscale. The other image I will include is one I have taken specially for the contents page. The image is of a guitar and therefore keeps the theme of music throughout the issue.

Magazine contents page examples

This Magazine contents page lists the contents of the magazine down the right hand side of the page. It is on the right third of the page, while the title fills the top of the first and second thirds. The thirds used effectively separate the information on the page, so the reader can easily find what they are searching for. Two large pictures can be seen below the title, while two smaller ones overlap these. In addition there is an image of the front cover at the bottom in the left-hand third, with information beside it. The thirds have been constantly referred to during the organisation of the information on this page. The pictures are quite dark, showing a lot of black which link with the sub-heading backgrounds in the contents. The background is grey and the text is white, making it simple but showing a constant colour scheme. The title, however, is orange which draws attention to it, making it the most obvious and important part of the page.

This contents page also uses thirds to separate the information. The title goes across the second and third thirds, which also contain the list of articles within the magazine. Similar to the previous magazine, the contents its split into sections with sub-headings. There are also three pictures which add colour to the page. In the the left hand third is further information about the people involved in producing this magazine, on a cream background. This links with the colour of the title, keeping a constant colour scheme throughout the page. The contents however uses various colours for the text to separate the different sections. This makes the contents easy to read and very attractive.

On my edited photograph I have made the background darker to emphasise the model. In addition I made the background blurrier than it was previously.

Update

Over the last few lessons, I have been working on the design of my magazine front cover. I have so far taken several pictures, as well as planning the font I will use for my magazine. Today, I wrote out a contents page of reports which will feature in my magazine.

Magazine Heading's

Here are my first Magazine Heading ideas. I have used a range of different fonts and colours to give a selection of very different headings. Though I think the colours look attractive, I believe the simple headings would be more appropriate for a school magazine and would be easier to read. 

Here are my favourite ten fonts: I have chosen these fonts as they are all quite simple and easy to read. I like the heading with the grey background but have edited it so that the text is white, which is easier to see on a dark background. I have also changed the the font as I believe it looks more professional than the last. I have also edited the heading in pink, by making the 'The' superscript, as this is the least important part of the heading.

I have narrowed my choices down to these four. Three have been edited to make the 'The' superscript, including one which has the 'Buzz' in subscript. The green font has been edited to be in 'small caps' which means the first letter of each word is in bold but the whole title is in capitals. Each font is easy to read and would look professional on a magazine front cover.



This is my final design for the title of my magazine:

I have chosen this as the white text on a dark grey background is easy to read and makes it stand out. Furthermore, the colours are not too bright or colourful to distract the reader from the picture. The grey links with the background of the photograph which also shows shades of grey.

Day 4

Today we began the lesson by editing our blogs, before continuing with our magazine research. I will be looking for appropriate pictures for a school magazine front cover, as well as planning how my own magazine photograph.

Day 3

Today in Media i edited my blog before i continued planning my school magazine. I have decided on the name, location and ethos of the school but must decide what my magazine will be about. I will then research school magazines which will help me plan how to layout my own magazine front cover.

Day Two

This lesson we learnt about the different properties of cameras and how to change the lighting to take a succesful picture. We also learnt how the size of lenses and number of mega pixels effect the photograph. I am now beginning my first assignment by desinging a school magazine.
